Follow the order
Same product. A different route to the buyer.
The decision
Choose a sales rep when you can fulfill customer orders and need someone to develop sales relationships. Consider a distributor when the missing capability is buying stock, reselling, local availability, or customer service. Some businesses need both, with clearly separated responsibilities.
Who handles each part of the sale?
| Decision | Independent sales rep | Distributor |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial role | Represents your line and develops orders under your agreement. | Typically buys products and resells them to its customers. |
| Inventory | Do not assume the rep buys or holds stock. | May purchase and hold stock; verify the actual commitment. |
| Customer billing | Your business normally invoices the buyer. | The distributor normally invoices its resale customer. |
| Compensation | Commission and any other fees you both agree. | Resale margin, with any agreed rebates or support. |
| Your operational work | Quoting, fulfillment, credit decisions, and product support remain yours unless agreed otherwise. | You still support the distributor; confirm which downstream tasks it takes on. |

Start with the gap in your route to market
A manufacturer that can ship reliably but cannot reach maintenance buyers has a different problem from one whose buyers require same-day local stock. The first may benefit from a rep with relevant buyer relationships. The second needs a distribution or logistics solution before more introductions will help.
Write down who will quote, accept orders, hold stock, extend credit, deliver, handle returns, and provide technical support. Then choose the partner whose actual offer fills the missing responsibilities. A job title or directory category is not enough.
Can a rep sell through your distributors?
Yes, where the businesses agree on the arrangement. A rep might develop demand with end users or specifiers while a distributor supplies the order. Before starting, decide which sales qualify for commission and how you will identify them. Otherwise, the rep may create demand you cannot reliably attribute.
For example, an equipment manufacturer might use a rep to introduce its line to regional dealers while the dealers hold stock and service customers. That is a channel design example, not a promise that every rep or distributor offers those capabilities.
- Identify whether the target buyer is an end user, dealer, distributor, or specifier.
- Agree who follows up when an inquiry crosses between direct sales and distribution.
- Check whether sales reporting can support the agreed commission calculation.
Compare the complete commercial offer
Do not compare a rep commission percentage directly with a distributor discount. A distributor may take on purchasing, inventory, credit, or service responsibilities that a rep does not. Compare what your business retains after the costs and responsibilities attached to each proposal.
Request concrete terms: initial stock purchase, reorder expectations, support duties, returns, territory, reporting, and any exclusivity. For an overseas partner, the International Trade Administration recommends checking territory coverage, product conflicts, facilities, and service capability.
Where Zilla Sales fits
Zilla Sales helps companies discover and contact independent reps and rep agencies. A profile mentioning distributor relationships or warehousing does not constitute a stock-purchase commitment. Confirm those capabilities directly.
If your objective is to find reps who sell through a particular channel, make that buyer type and channel clear in your opportunity. If you need a distributor to buy inventory, establish that requirement before paying for rep contacts.
Common questions
Will an independent rep buy my inventory?
Do not assume so. Representation normally concerns developing sales; purchasing, storage, and fulfillment need separate confirmation. If inventory ownership is essential, ask for a specific distribution proposal.
Can I use different sales channels in different territories?
Potentially. Decide which accounts, products, and channels each partner serves, and review existing commitments before adding another relationship. Use your agreement process to resolve conflicting rights.
Does Zilla Sales supply distributors?
Zilla Sales is a rep marketplace and matching platform. Use it to evaluate rep fit and confirm channel capabilities; it does not promise inventory buyers or distribution agreements.
